Unions in education

I am always a bit baffled over the debate of whether unions are detrimental to public education.  To me the answer is simple, they are hugely beneficial.  If you want to ensure that hosiptals are safe and providing excellent care, make sure that the doctors, nurses and medical staff are treated well.  If you want to make sure that a police or fire-fighting force is effective, ensure that officers and fire-fighters are treated respectfully as employees.

The same goes for schools.  Teachers and education support workers need their unions to protect their role in the public education system.  Their working conditions are our children’s learning conditions.  The video below is a hilarious illustration of this.
